Many caregivers are caught in the “sandwich” position in which they are attempting to care for family elders at the same time they are caring for their own children and families. They feel torn in many directions. We know that caregivers often hesitate to admit the difficult position in which they find themselves and often fail to ask for help. Those who do not receive the support they need are at risk to develop serious concerns such as depression, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, insomnia, loss of appetite, and lethargy. Feelings of guilt and anger can be almost overwhelming. As well, there may be considerable financial strain and possible family discord as caregivers discover the high costs involved in elder care. Many fear their financial resources will be depleted.

Elder abuse is a serious health and social issue impacting the well-being of thousands of elders in Canada each day. It is estimated that between four and ten per cent of Ontario’s seniors experience some form of abuse – be it physical, psychological/emotional, sexual or financial. Sadly, only about 20% of incidents are ever reported. Elder abuse remains very much a hidden crime.
Elder abuse can take place in the home, in care or residential settings or in the community. It is defined by the World Health Organization as “a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring in any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, that causes harm or distress to an older person”. It is seldom a one-time occurrence and is usually committed by someone close to the senior.
Elder abuse, in any form, is never acceptable and may be a criminal act.

As most people age, they would like to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, even when they require assistance. The alternative, which is facility-based care, is usually less desirable and should be considered only when absolutely necessary. It is unfortunate that cost often determines the choice. This should not be the case as there are many options and services available for seniors who require some support to remain comfortably and safely in their own home. When cost is a factor, there are ways to create cash flow through insurance products.
